paul-mccartneyYou listened to his music when he was a part of the world changing band that need not be mentioned, you followed him as he pursued his solo path to even bigger stardom and now you can see him perform live all in aid of helping to repair a crumbling roof of a building that’s history is just as rich as the music legend himself. Sir Paul McCartney is headlining an exciting fundraising event that is due to be held on the 30th of June this year in aid of the Old Vic Theatre in London and the dazzling performance, which not only features Sir Paul McCartney live but will also be hosted by Kevin Spacey, is expected to raise the roof, all in aid of fixing a roof that has not been mended for years.

One cannot help but wonder how much a hotel, with all its rooms and amenities, pay for electricity each month. The amount would probably startle us and with Eskom’s recent price hike, the amount that hotels pay for electricity must be more than astronomical. However, there are hotels around the world as well as a few right here in South Africa that are taking the lead and utilising solar power in order to bring down their electricity bills as well as contribute to helping the environment. Here are three hotels around the world that are taking the environment into consideration and utilising solar power to make a change while still making their customers feel as comfortable as possible.

water savingAll of us are guilty of wasting water. When you do not turn the tap off while you are brushing your teeth or you leave your sprinkler system on for longer than is necessary, you are guilty of wasting water, a resource that we all take for granted. Saving water is an incredibly easy thing to do and watching your water usage habits can become a healthy  and subconscious habit if you are aware of the amount of water you use per day and moderate this usage. Saving water is not an activity that will change your daily routine and is even easier than other activities such as recycling (even though you should be doing this too!) Here are a few water saving tips, many of them obvious but all of them imperative.

We all love to shop. Well, most of us do. And if you find yourself in the majority (and most women do, just to be stereotypical) that shed a tear at the sight of a beautiful shoe, then boutique shopping is more than merely picking something to wear, it is a sensory experience. Boutique shopping is a skill that only some women can master, and if you have the appropriate credit card and the determination of a true shopper, boutique shopping can be a fulfilling experience that will leave you with a sense of satisfaction that one can only get from trying on an outfit or clothing item that is perfect for you. In London, there is a kaleidoscope of shopping lanes, road and avenues to explore but if you are a visitor to the City, there is one destination that will make any boutique shopping enthusiast jump with glee and this is Knightsbridge.

I have to let a long and drawn out scream exit my body.  And it’s all explained in two words:  Sophie Dahl.  What is it with food programming these days?  I am sure if I went to a channel head and said, “hey I have this lady who used to model and used to be large and is now a skinny vegetarian who can’t cook and by the way she has a famous author for a grandfather and she wants to present a cookery series…” I would be laughed out of the room.

So how does a vegetarian end up cooking mince on screen and is seemingly excited by that?  Not to mention the non food bits – I think we have to leave it to Merchant Ivory to do “whimsical” and leave poetry readings to late night live art shows.  It makes me wonder why, justbecause someone is famous for being famous, they think they can lend their hand to anything?  Madonna writes a children’s book?  Gwyneth Paltrow is working on a cookbook?
