Forbes Extensive Art Collection Goes on Auction

The Forbes dynasty, of the informative Forbes Magazine fame, has decided to put much of their exquisite art collection and antique furniture from their Old Battersea House, on auction. The auction, taking place in Edinburgh on 01 November 2011, features an art collection from various period artists such as: Benjamin Robert Haydon (1786-1846) who painted Queen Victoria and Prince Albert; Walter Grieves (1846-1930); and Ramsay Richard Reinagle (1775-1862), amongst many others famously talented artisans.

The Old Battersea House built in 1699 has seen many owners and tenants, but none as famous as the art collecting Forbes family. The property for rent in Battersea was taken on a 99-year lease by Malcolm Forbes who saw the potential in the rundown home and its prime location along the riverside. The house, littered with the Forbes private art collection, also features furniture dating back to the early 1700’s such as a pair of George II Irish Mahogany side chairs, and art pieces such as an early 18^th century style cream-painted and parcel-gilt pier table, amongst much other traditionally antique furniture.

Malcolm Forbes understood the fine art of collecting and clearly passed that trait onto his children, with his sons assisting him in his quest for art. He achieved a wonderful eclectic mix of a modern and fine arts collection with several paintings of Queen Victoria adorning the walls. The art collection features many personal notes from the Queen, as well as the black and white hand-stitched stockings with the royal crest, which Queen Victoria preferred after she went into mourning over the death of Prince Albert. The art collection gives one an insight into Queen Victoria.

The Forbes family has properties all over the world and are well-known for their Forbes Richest List. The Forbes property also features property for sale in Hyde Park, which is rated amongst some of the most sought-after property in London. Clearly their art collection is not their only asset.

Malta Independence Day Celebrations

Due to its spectacular situation in the Mediterranean Sea, nestled between powerful countries, Malta was under colonial rule for centuries. Malta Independence Day or Jum l-Indipendenza is celebrated on September 21^st and each year the Maltese people throw a huge celebration in memory of this event.

The islands have previously been under the rule of the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Sicilians, Knights of St John, French and the British and since they obtained independence in 1964, not a year goes by where this is not celebrated in Malta. This year the Nationalist Party will celebrate Independence Day from the 16^thto the 20^th of September at the Granaries in Floriana. It is declared a national holiday when all Malta companies and businesses close in honour of the event.

The theme of this year’s event is “Pride and Confidence” or ‘Kburin b’pajjizna ghax nemmnu f’pajjizna’ (Proud of our country, confident in our country). The Nationalist Party has chosen this theme for Independence Day as it is incredibly proud of the many achievements of both the country and its people. While Europe, and indeed the rest of the world, has been under incredible pressure due to the decline in the economic climate, Malta managed to fare pretty well thanks to its stable workforce and well planned economic decisions.

Recent data from Eurostat has shown Malta’s economy to have the fastest recorded growth and the fifth lowest unemployment rate in the EU. This is yet another reason for Malta to be proud of itself and another thing to celebrate on Independence Day. It is also proud to offer solidarity to the thousands of people held in Libya, whom it also helped leave Libya and return to their families; with some requesting immigration to Malta.

Independence Day is typically celebrated with a march along Valletta’s Republic Street by the Armed Forces Band and Troop; followed by a guard of honour in front of St John’s Co-Cathedral and then High Mass. After this there will be a parade and wreath laying ceremony. The evening will see a performance by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra at The Palace Courtyard in Valletta, as a final end to the celebration of Malta Independence.

Notting Hill Carnival Celebrates Bright and Beautiful Culture

The Notting Hill Carnival is among London’s most famous festivals – and with this eagerly anticipated celebration just around the corner, Londoners will be gearing up for the biggest and brightest carnival yet! 2. The London Triathlon 2011

Rory Bremner Translates French Opera

Oh Rory Bremner, will your wonderments ever cease? Rory’s gift of the gab has allowed him translate the French comedy, Orpheus in the Underworld. This comedy has been in existence for over one hundred and fifty years and it is now going to be performed at the Bullingdon Club at the Oxford University. This is an incredibly prestigious place which has seen the likes of presidents, politicians and actors the world over. Yet let us not dilly-dally, on with the explanation of the show itself!

It is a full-on spoof of Greek Mythology and speaks of the tale of Eurydice who is carried off to Hades by Pluto. The gods then fight and quarrel as they attempt to win her back from the dark lord of the underworld.

Rory Bremner, along with a translator London worked through the script and came up with a current retelling of the classic tale. The opera was originally set in Greece and when it found its way to France it was caught up in quite a number of scandals, thanks to the rather ‘naughty’ scenes which it was well-known for. Rory Bremners version is more than likely going to be also performed at the Westminster penthouse; this is due to its political relevance.

This show represents the opportunity for Rory to have fun with his art, as it is both a musical and intellectual adventure which will be most enjoyed by those who enjoy clever, political satire mixed with their entertainment.

As far as interpreting London stage shows go, this is Rory’s fourth show which he will now be translating for the hungry masses. This opera will travel from London to Northern Ireland, and then back to the Young Vic for its final performances. Rory Bremner surely can be pleased about this amazing contribution to the arts.

Fashionable Flash Mob Stops London Traffic!

From impromptu pillow fights to choreographed dance routines, the concept of the flash mob is nothing new – but brands are constantly developing creative new ways to generate publicity by harnessing the spontaneous, fun-loving spirit of flash mob gatherings. Eco-fashion brand Wear Chemistry recently made headlines with a flash fashion show that quite literally stopped traffic! While fashion fanatics would normally expect to see the latest Polo shirts make their debut on the catwalk or in a shop window, the newest Wear Chemistry collection made its first appearance on the streets of London in the form of a flash mob, as models staged a “fashion protest” during rush hour.

Last Tuesday morning, a group of flash mob models paraded up and down pedestrian crossings in the trendy areas of Carnaby Street and Oxford Circus; London’s rush hour traffic stopped in its tracks as the feisty flash mob showcased the Wear Chemistry collection of organic bamboo cotton garments designed for men and women. Models for this flash fashion launch were recruited via social media platforms Facebook and Twitter, and the flash mob lasted around 5 minutes. Wear Chemistry wanted to make the statement that eco-fashion is all about style and confidence, and it seems green brands are taking over the fashion world one stitch at a time!

Wear Chemistry isn’t the only fashion brand embracing the concept of flash mob advertising; Pierre Garroudi painted the town red this month as 25 models took to the streets of London clad in his latest crimson collection. While the aim of the Wear Chemistry flash mob was to promote sustainable lifestyle choices, the Garroudi flash mob placed more of an emphasis on high-end fashion and glamour. Between these two extremes, from red to green, we can see to very clear examples of how effective a flash mob can be as part of an advertising strategy – both the events were well-received, although we’re sure neither caused as much of a stir as the infamous annual “No Pants” flash mob!

With an increasing number of fashion brands realising the potential power of the flash mob, will we soon be seeing workwear Polo shirts and hi-vis jackets hit the streets of London? Or will we come across models in summer swimwear riding the Tube? Watch this space…

It’s certainly an impossible feat to call Mr. Bernie Ecclestone a ‘humble man’. Alongside his two daughters, Tamara and Petra, Bernie stands short yet proud of the fact that he is one of the UK’s top-most wealthy property owners. Bernie has managed to amass £2.4 billion in his lifetime and he is now happy to share it with his daughters. Now, this very lucky pair of children will both enjoy a luxury mansion in the heart of the UK’s most prestigious suburbs.

For Tamara and Petra, their father has just dropped a cool £100 million on a pair of properties that best suits their incredibly lavish lifestyles. The F1 boss went straight to the top of the property game and found a private sale in Kensington and Chelsea respectively. The two houses chosen for the little princesses are amongst two of the most expensive properties in the country. Multi-level floors and an excess of bedrooms, plus a private theatre, gym, and multiple dining rooms are the order of the day. Royal Wedding will be “Low-Key”

The date for the Royal wedding has been set! Prince William and Kate Middleton will be married on April 29th 2011, and while one might expect an event like this to be swarming with security guards carefully monitoring their alarm systems, the couple say their wedding will be a low-key, relaxed affair with minimal security. In fact, the British Royal family has embraced social networking by announcing the wedding details on Twitter!

The bride will arrive at Westminster Abbey by car, accompanied by her father Michael. This certainly sets a more casual tone for the Royal wedding day than Princess Diana’s glass horse-drawn carriage in 1981. The archbishop of Canterbury will marry the couple, who will then board a carriage for the grand procession to Buckingham Palace, as crowds of well-wishers cheer for them.

Meanwhile in South Africa, top security firms will also be gearing up and testing their alarm systems Centurion to Cape Town, following the announcement that Prince William’s stag party may be held in the picturesque Cape.

While Will and Kate are eager to keep the atmosphere relaxed, elite SAS snipers will be undercover along the Royal wedding parade route on the big day. Security experts will identify vulnerable points along the route, working with senior Scotland Yard officers to ensure that all goes safely and smoothly; this is designed to deter any terrorist attacks that could be planned for an iconic date like that of the Royal wedding.

Back at the Palace, the Royal couple will share a romantic kiss on the balcony, and the Queen will host an informal lunch for 900 guests. Prince Charles will host an evening wedding reception for family and friends, and the newlyweds will leave on their honeymoon the next day.

The Royal wedding promises to be a truly memorable day, and while security professionals will be hard at work protecting the couple, the public will likely be too busy focusing on the gorgeous bride’s gown to notice!

Drawing Fashion Celebrates A Unique Skill

Deftly sewing an embroided logo onto a tatty old dress could push it into ‘fashionable’ status. Even creating personalised workwear that inherently symbolizes the designers clever fashion sense speaks volumes about the nature of design. At a stunning exhibition at the Design Museum, (Shad Thames, London) a show known as Drawing Fashion is now running and will be running until March 2011. Drawing Fashion looks at and celebrates a distinctive art during the periods of the 20^th and 21^st century. Original works of art at the Drawing Fashion exhibition come from design gurus such as Chanel, Viktor & Rolf, Dior, Comme des Garçons and Poiret, Lacroix and McQueen.

This exhibition aims to show these (and many more) fashion designers at their artistic heights. This begins with the commencement of the century when Lepape (1887-1971) revolutionized fashion with his highbrow fashion sketches. We then move on to the 40’s and the 50’s when Gruau changed the face of fashion for the better; and all the way through the 60’s, 70’s and the 80’s as contemporary artists such as Mats Gustafson, Aurore de la Morinerie and Francois Berthoud kept fashion on its toes.

Alongside these famous works of art is media that reflected the times that each piece of art lived in. Film clips, news reels, photographs and music will be placed with the drawing fashion sketches and templates that suit each era. This will help to show us how each decade played its part in influencing fashion as a whole. All of the social changes of each decade, the cultural changes and the stylistic choices all play a part in creating a beautiful fashion design.

This collection is over thirty years in the making, as Joelle Chariau of Galerie Bartsch & Chariau has been frantically busy playing catch-up as well as collector for this stunning exhibition. Tickets can be purchased here and the various events are priced differently to reflect various taste. Drawing Fashion runs until next year, therefore there is no excuse to not view it as soon as possible!
