Top Gear MPH Live Show in Cape Town This Week

The world’s most controversial and entertaining car magazine show, Top Gear, returns to South African shores this week with the 3rd annual MPH Live show which takes place at Grand West in Cape Town from Thursday to Sunday. The adaptation of the television show to a live theater style performance has come together seamlessly and its popularity continues to grow. Let’s take a look at what exactly it is that draws over 350 million viewers to this show worldwide.

The Presenters:

The team of Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond are the ones that managed to turn an ordinary BBC Top Gear car show into a worldwide hit. The opinionated and often crude personality of Clarkson is cleverly complimented by Hammond’s razor sharp whit and willingness to challenge everything Clarkson says. Together, the banter created between the two presenters is what provides the very core of what the show is all about.

The Show:

The Top Gear series itself is an extremely knowledgeable, controversial and entertaining look at motor vehicles from around the world. Instead of simply providing boring reviews about numerous cars and car dealers, the presenters prefer to put different cars in all kinds of situations to assess how the cars react and cope compared to other cars. Clarkson is not afraid step on industry big names with his comments and says exactly what he wants about the various cars that appear on the show.

Some of the “situations” mentioned above include Top Gear episodes where the gents can be seen racing a Bugatti Veyron with a small plane from Germany to London and racing vehicles from the 1940’s era, from London to Edinburgh. The situations that the presenters find themselves in make for an almost “thriller movie” kind of feeling in each Top Gear episode.

The Stig:

The Stig. Well, what started off as a fun experiment has turned into a worldwide phenomenon as viewers around the world keep asking: “Who in the world is The Stig?” One of Television’s best kept secrets, the whole fad started when the show revealed that they would never release the name of The Stig who is apparently an ex-racing driver who was hired to race reasonably priced cars around the Top Gear racetrack to assess how quick family cards can actually go. People have constantly been speculating about the identity of the Stig but nothing has ever been confirmed. The best guess from readers this far is Damon Hill (ex F1 racer) and Michael Schumacher (Best F1 racer of all time). Hopefully, if Top Gear eventually loses its allure to fans young and old, we’ll figure out who the Stig is.

The MPH Live Show:

The 90 minute Top Gear Season of live shows includes 16 different scenes and stunts which will be presented by Clarkson, Hammond and South Africa’s very own motor enthusiast – Sasha Martinengo. The live show promises to provide the same sort of theatre thriller atmosphere as the television show with cars and drivers being pushed to the limit in numerous stunts and “experiments”. The show’s motto of “ambitious but not always successful” will be adhered to in true Top Gear spirit. A combination of some of the TV show’s regular features such as “The lap” performed by The Stig and some never seen live sequences, will provide old and new fans with something to enjoy.

I will definitely be checking out the live show this year when it reaches my town. Be sure you check it out too as it promises to be a show to remember. I look forward to hearing any reviews in the comments section of this article from anyone who’s checked out this year’s Top Gear MPH Live show.

Happy motoring!
