To err is celebrity?

It’s not only make-up artists and plastic surgeons that rub shoulders with celebrity’s requiring their services. The rich and famous are above many things such as public transport and queuing for clubs, but the law is not one of them.

Those in the legal profession, from legal translation agencies to lawyers, get their fair share of encounters with famous personalities. No one likes a fallen star, but celebrities must face the music when flashing lights become those of police and not paparazzi.

Over the years many famous faces have appeared on mugshots all over the world. For some celebrities a run in with the law spells a shameful end to a career in the spotlight, while for others it can be an effective publicity stunt.

In 2009 American singer Chris Brown undoubtedly took the prize for most talked about criminal, after he beat up fellow celebrity and girlfriend at the time, Rihanna. Closer to home here are some of the more notable wrongdoers who have passed through the legal system.

1. Legendary Black Sabbath front man Ozzy Osbourne was arrested in 1982 in San Antonio, Texas. Wearing a dress, Osbourne urinated on the Alamo Cenotaph, a 60 foot high monument, and was promptly banned from the city for ten years. In 1984 he was arrested again in Tennessee for public intoxication when he was found stumbling along Beale Street.

2. Another British bad boy Mick Jagger had his mugshot taken in 1972. The 60s rock star, along with Keith Richards and three other Rolling Stones members, was charged with assault and obstructing justice after a physical fight with a photographer. Five years prior to the incident Jagger and Richards both spent short periods in jail for drug possession.

3. English romcom favourite Hugh Grant was famously arrested under charges of lewd conduct in 1995 following his dealings with prostitute Divine Brown. Grant decided to take the non-conventional celebrity approach to dealing with scandals and did numerous television interviews in which he publicly admitted his mistake and apologised to his girlfriend and fans. In 2007 he had a second run in with the law and was charged with assault after reportedly throwing a tub of food at a photographer.

In an age obsessed with celebrity culture people love to idolise and track the every move of those in the entertainment industry, even if they topple off those pedestals every so often.
