When you think of any Chinese Band, often images of brightly coloured pop acts come to mind with shrieking vocals that don’t contain much thought or talent and would be best suited to the ever popular cliché of a Chinese karaoke bar. Lonely China Day are probably the most popular and talented representatives of the small indie rock movement that is taking place quietly amongst numerous Chinese bands in the mainland. This Readily Assimilative People is an album that is made up of soothing vocals accompanied by some truly inspiring rock guitar riffs. Lead singer of Lonely China Day, Deng Pei, does sing in Mandarin so in order to understand the poetic lyrics, you might need to employ the services of an English Chinese translation service who will tell you that the lyrics of this Chinese band are heavily inspired by ancient Chinese poetry. But there really isn’t any need for an interpreting service as Lonely China Day will have you bopping to their tunes thanks to the sheer quality and catchiness of their tunes.
Lonely China Day did perform in the UK last year, but the sheer class of this band can be drawn from their performance at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, in 2008. An un-assuming crowd was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this Chinese band and they received rave reviews throughout numerous publications.
