David Starkey Evokes Half a Millennia of History in Celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee

David Starkey, a monarchy historian and author of many books, has given an illuminating account of the history of the Thames to be showcased in the National Maritime Museum exhibition that he is currently curating for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. An illustrative affair that will incorporate priceless items from London’s illustrious heritage, Starkey is said to have roused even the Queen’s curiosity.

Holding the rank of a British constitutional historian and well-known as a radio personality and television presenter, David Starkey has aptly named his display ‘Royal River: Power, Pageantry and the Thames’. Covering 500 years of what Starkey has hailed ‘liquid history,’ the unconventional academic has used 400 instances to relate the majestic history of the Thames. A timeline that stretches back 500 years from today’s London river cruise, England’s favoured historian is bringing 350 never-before-seen artefacts into the public eye.

The source of a large degree of excitement amongst the public and scholars, Canaletto’s artwork of “The Thames on Lord Mayor’s Day” will make its London debut at David Starkey’s Maritime presentation for the first time since its completion in 1974. The painting shows London as a Venice-daydream with St. Paul’s in the background, and is rumoured to be the inspiration behind a disco cruise or two, and more importantly- this year’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant and.

Asked to comment on his exceptional relation of the famed Thames, Starkey has said that his exhibition “brings to life the extraordinary and varied history of the Thames as Britain’s royal river and London’s ‘grandest street.’” A moment that will surely evoke the poignant memory of half a millennium of pageantry and popular celebration, David Starkey has managed to bring the sights, sounds and smells of a time past back to the National Maritime Museum- running until September 9^th. With summer almost in full swing, parks are filling up, central heating is being turned down, and umbrellas are being pushed further back into closets. This is the time when the UK comes alive with all manner of summer festivals. From traditional to foreign cultures, to annual music festivals and even new concept gatherings, summer festivals in England are a great element of the season.

One of these festivals is BP Big Summer Screens 2012. This is a really family-centred event that aims to introduce theatre and opera to the whole family at no cost whatsoever. World-class opera and ballet is on exhibition at the festival. 16th July: Metamorphosis Titian

Metamorphosis Titian is a unique collaboration that sees music, images and movement come together on a modern stage that inspires the different art forms through each other. It’s a truly special addition to the summer festival, where choreographers will be drawing influence from National gallery paintings by various renowned artists as well as musicians. Just another selling point for estate agents Battersea, who will no doubt be promoting all events in London to foreign buyers.

Thames Festival: A Feast for the Ears. Fit for a Queen

The BT River of Music Festival is a two-day river Thames festival happening on the 21^st and 22^nd of July, and everyone’s invited. Details have just been released about the much-anticipated free event that sees bands from around the world congregating in London and taking to various stages along the river Thames. The festival doubles as a curtain raiser to the Olympics and sees some world class acts on the bill.

Six stages along the river will host acts from different continents. The performances will see collaborations from artists right across the fame spectrum. Famous bands will find themselves along the Thames performing at the festival with local community groups from all around the United Kingdom. Some emerging artists will be performing for the first time in a large-scale public setting. It’s sure to be a feast on the eyes and ears for passengers on London boat trips cruising the Thames as the festival showcases such diverse talent.

Each stage sees various acts performing and the Thames festival will come alive with foreign and local sounds. Here are a few of the different stages and artists being featured from the different nations:

Asia Stage:
Zakir Hassain, a master of the tabla, takes to the stage, as does Gong Linna with her enchanting vocals and Khyam Allami, a true class act, adds to the bill, giving the Thames festival a great Asian influence. It all comes together with an array of traditional and more contemporary Arabic musicians.

European Stages:
Bandleader and pianist, Jools Holland, takes to the stage as a European representative, as does Andy Sheppard, Penguin Café and Beverly Knight.

Americas Stages:
Scissor Sisters really get the party going on the Thames. The festival may just see any vessel near the action converted into a disco boat when they take to the stage. Joining the American heavyweights are Roberto Fonseca, the former pianist for Buena Vista Social Club as well as composer and talented trumpeter, Wynton Marsalis accompanied by the Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra.

Africa Stage:
Some of the giants of African music make appearances at this special Thames festival. These include Hugh Masekela, joined by Southern African singers. Then the Manchester World Voices Choir supports the sensational talent, Anelique Kidjo and her band. Finally, the renowned Baaba Maal, guiraist and singer from Senegal takes to the Festival stage on the banks of the river Thames.

This promises to be a very special event and with the Olympics just a breath away, it’s a great showcase for the diversity that surrounds such an occasion. In her Jubilee year the Thames Festival really is fit for a Queen.

Considered one of the most unique warehouse parties in London The Lazer Cave opened its doors again for a serious party on 4^th May 2012. The Lazer Cave is named for the lazer maze that opens for each festival and party. A combination of lazers, lights and smoke are positioned at the mouth of a cave that is customised for each party. With mirrored walls that exponentially amplify the alien party effect, party goers are naturally taken to another planet, while the music serves to infuse the atmosphere further with a boost of sheer vibes and a night of unwinding.

The warehouse party this year was considered a master of all parties with the Land of Kings pulling off an awesome event. People flocked to party to exceptional DJ skills, view seriously great art and watch very wicked lazer cave effects. Curators turned on very cool art displays while the lazer experts went above board in their quest to create lazer art. Cool customers partied all night without giving the stresses of life a second thought. It was all about enjoying the biggest warehouse party in London, to the max.

The festival organisers have said this was one of the most awesome events thus far and are already looking forward to providing even better lazer cave parties in 2013. One has to wonder if organizers wanted to keep the original warehouse vibe going; did they add cantilever racking and pillar protectors to the mix.

Vessels Ready for Diamond Jubilee Boat Pageant

Months of preparation have gone into preparing for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Boat Pageant and now the wait is almost over. For some boat owners, the wait is all they have left with their preparations all secured. At least while preparations were under way they had some work to distract themselves with but now that is behind them, which is good news for enthusiasts. However not all preparations for the Queen’s Jubilee boat pageant are finished; with over one million people expected to line the Thames River on the day there is still a lot to brace for. With that many people, river boat pageant tickets and distribution seems like an impossible mission, but organisers are reporting ‘so far so good.’ The event should put Thames boat trips into the spotlight as a tourism activity of the highest priority for years to come.

One boat that has had about 15 years to prepare for a part in the Diamond Jubilee boat pageant trips is the Jolly Brit. Owner Henry Butt bought the boat 15 years ago; it was an abandoned ‘jolly boat’ which was part of the Royal Yacht Britannica fleet and used by the Royal Family for shore trips from their yacht. London’s Eldon Residence Granted Heritage House Status

London’s oldest residence, Eldon home has finally been officially recognised as a heritage house. After 178 years of being preserved and maintained by the City of London, the historic abode will finally become a stand-alone tourist attraction. Previously linked to the Museum of London, Eldon home’s new heritage status will guarantee additional funding and status for the maintenance of the traditional structure.

Eldon house is considered the jewel in the crown of Central London property. A heritage house that is rated above hotels in Baddeck and Falmouth, Eldon residence is seen as a pioneer in architecture. Previously home to the Harris family, the residence is filled with pristine family heirlooms and furnishings. Built back in 1834, the Harris’ impressive family tree lived and walked within the halls and gardens of Eldon; adding to its distinctly British origins. In 1960, the Harris grandchildren donated Eldon house and all of its priceless belongings to the City of London.
