London Farmer’s Market; Ealing Earns Its Place

On a recent visit to the Ealing Farmer’s market, I discovered that the larger London farmer’s markets are not necessarily the better ones. Situated in the heart of Ealing on Leeland road, this local farmer’s market is small and picturesque and fills up in the early morning with Refrigerated Freight trucks as exhibitors lay out their first picks of the day and freshest in produce from the nearby farms.

That’s the beautiful thing about London. It’s a metropolis and huge city in its entirety but is close enough to farms that the freshest produce can be sourced from the surrounding farms. Local farmer’s markets like the Ealing farmer’s market has everything from earth picked vegetables and fruit, top-quality beef and lamb to farm-shot rook and even squirrel. Ealing farmer’s market also offers imported and local cheeses, fresh cut flowers, fish right off the boat which is transported in a refrigerated truck to ensure optimum freshness and also speciality wines. Ealing Farmer’s market offers a large variety of produce to the discerning customer with newly baked breads and cakes lining the streets and while walking and weaving through the small stalls, the scent will draw you nearer for a closer look and even a taste. This London farmer’s market happens every Saturday for four hours while the street is closed off to traffic to create an even more enjoyable experience. Keep an eye out for the infamous Malcolm Stone’s heritage apples, which are now almost an institution, he grows everything from Egremont Russets to Peasgood Nonsuch. On the 24^th of September this local farmer’s market celebrated its 10^th anniversary and Ealing family day. Families were out if full force and enjoyed some of the vibrant celebrations and live music.

The Ealing farmer’s market is not only a beautiful London farmer’s market that you can take pleasure in due to the high stature of products on offer but it has also become a community gathering where warm greetings can be heard from across the market to fellow community members.

The epicentre of London has so many diverse and amazing things to do and experience. They really have catered for Londoners and tourists alike. Portobello market is one of the most famous street markets in the world and the world’s largest antique market. It is situated on Portobello road which spans two miles long and was originally a farm, named after Puerto Bello in the Caribbean in memory of Admiral Vernon who captured the town in 1739. Many people enjoy the hustle and bustle of the Portobello market on Saturdays. North of the road is where you will find the fashion section. Old, new, designer and affordable. If you are looking for something you can wear on your body then this is the section to go to. Vibrant colours and rich textures fill the street with bargaining going on all around you. In the middle of the market is the delectable fresh food section. Locals come to purchase farm fresh fruit and vegetables transported there by a refrigerated courier ensuring the freshest quality. There are bread stalls, for an amazing morning croussant; a fish monger; a French cheese stall and an array of colourful and beautifully decorated cakes on show. Later on the Saturday some real bargains can be found as traders want to get rid of their last stock because in terms of food logistics they would rather sell the produce than have it rot. They are heard shouting “Parnd a Box, Parnd a Box”, which means, give me a pound for this box which is packed with the last of the ripe fruit and vegetables from that day. The antique section of the market is prominent and antiques from any past year can be found, especially popular collectables. There is an old, used section were hidden treasure and peculiar, beautiful things can be discovered.

The Portobello market is a shoppers dream. You may be going there with a specific thing in mind or just to wonder the market street, whatever your intention the experience will prove wonderful.

Thames Festival: 9-11th September

Every year in September the edges of London’s River come alive with the annual Thames Festival, and 2011 looks to be no different from years before. Usually only used by the locals for Christmas party boats or for a place to run along in the mornings, the Thames River comes alight with a myriad of international food flavours, fireworks and theatre attractions in celebration of London and its iconic river. Yet not the great London Boat Races! The last London boat race took place on Saturday, 3^rd of April 2010 at 16:30 – This was the 156^th boat race with Cambridge pushing home with top honors. The Oxford and Cambridge boat race is a very traditional rowing competition that has remained in existence since 1829; therefore it is steeped in history and rigid tradition. Every year, the London Boat Race is said to attract a quarter-million spectators.

The race runs 4 and ¼ miles from the Thames, then to Putney and finally Mortlake – this lightning-fast race is over in 16 to 18 minutes, this ensures a thrilling race for all spectators and contestants involved. Cambridge is the current champions, besting Oxford slightly by 79 to 75. Almost nothing has changed since the original days of the race, save for the fact that this race is now an international event that draws coverage from all forms of media; there is even a live broadcast from the internet on the day of the race.

In 1998, Cambridge set the record with a time of 16 minutes and 19 seconds. Cambridge also holds the record for finishing the first race in 1845. Olympic gold medalists, mountain climbers, politicians and celebrities have all partaken in the London Boat Race at one point in time, with the notable addition of comedian Hugh Laurie in the 1980 Cambridge team.
