The frost has begun to melt and temperatures are slowly creeping back up as April edges closer, signaling a slow but very welcome start to spring. Having endured the coldest winter for 30 years, Britons will no doubt start to flock to one of many beautiful London parks, to spend time feeding ducks and birds and enjoying the scenic views.
Visiting parks in London is a traditional and popular English pastime. Expansive green landscapes set the scene for a tranquil encounter with nature – a most welcome reprieve from the often crowded and polluted busier parts of London. Some of the best London parks are both beautiful and functional, providing city slickers with a place to engage in outdoor activities like cycling, jogging, or a game of Frisbee.
Here are five of the most visited London parks that tourists and locals alike will be frequenting this summer:
- Battersea Park is known as an excellent location for exercise, as well as a prime spot for entertaining children. With a children’s zoo, a boating lake, playgrounds and impressive views of the Thames, Battersea Park frequently plays host to community events like arts fairs and puppet shows.
- Hampstead Heath is a most well-known London park. The vast green space with sprawling hills is the venue of choice for many concerts as well as lakeside events and tourist walks. Though it is not central to London, people are happy to travel the extra distance to feel more removed from the city.
- Any St James Park estate agent will tell you that the small and quaint park is one of the biggest selling points of the area. A bridge over the park’s lake provides a splendid view of Buckingham Palace, and the abundant birdlife are an excellent way to occupy the attention of mischievous children.
- Kensington Gardens in London is perfectly suited to physical activities. Runners, joggers and roller-bladers delight in the well-maintained sidewalks, while soccer players make use of the open green space. A highlight of Kensington Gardens is the Peter Pan statue, which stands to honour author J.M Barrie who once lived in the area.
- Regent’s Park in London is only a short ride out of the city and attracts loads of visitors as the location of the London Zoo. The former royal hunting ground also features tennis courts, and the beautiful St Mary’s Gardens, popular amongst those who enjoy a leisurely stroll.
After a long cold winter a relaxing and indulgent picnic at one of these beautiful London parks is certainly an inviting option. Trade your thick coat for a light jacket and enjoy some of the best of London’s outdoor experiences.
