During the working week, you might find practical embroidered workwear is a staple in your wardrobe; however, special occasions are a great excuse to slip out of your workwear clothing into something rather more glamorous.
While the exquisite creations of Valentino Garavani may lie beyond the reach of your budget, there could be no better source of visual inspiration when shopping for embroidered evening dresses than fashion design icon Valentino.
Valentino gowns have graced the forms of Hollywood’s most glamorous women, from Audrey Hepburn to Elizabeth Taylor; Princess Margaret and Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis have also been devoted clients of Valentino. The instantly recognisable “V” logo has become synonymous with extraordinary style in the fashion world – the Italian-born Valentino somehow managed to achieve a delicate balance between extravagance and elegance throughout his career as a designer.
Since his retirement from catwalk fashion in 2007, Valentino has appeared in a fascinating documentary film exploring his career and personal life. His partner Giancarlo Giammetti, his close circle of friends and his 6 pampered pugs all feature in this film, fittingly titled Valentino: The Last Emperor.
This month, a Valentino exhibition opened in Brisbane, Australia, featuring 100 gorgeous Valentino gowns at the Gallery of Modern Art. The exhibition, which will run until 14 November, includes some of Valentino’s most breathtaking clothing designs, from an Oscar gown worn by Julia Roberts to the wedding dress designed for Jackie Onassis. As if these dresses aren’t enough to make you drool, the Valentino Retrospective also features a collection of the signature Valentino Russo (Valentino Red) creations.
Although Valentino has bid “arrivederci” to the public world of fashion, his legacy shows why so many see him as a creative genius and the final word in haute couture. The House of Valentino continues to produce fabulous creations, ensuring that the legacy of fashion’s last emperor will endure for many decades to come.
