Weird Sports: The teams that never made the Olympics (but should have!)

For everything mainstream you are sure to find something alternative that pushes the boundaries of what is normal. Sport is a passion, a hobby and a pastime for many, and weird sports are just as dedicated to the sense of unity and victory that comes with any conventional sport. Here are a few sports that will have you cringing, laughing and scratching your head in dismay.

toeToe Wrestling: Here, the strong and determined battle it out, feet first. This weird sport is somewhat of a national activity in parts of the UK, with the first Toe Wrestling Championships taking place in 1976 at a local Derbyshire pub. How it works is that opposing competitors lock each other’s toes together and try and force the other competitor’s foot to the ground.  This sport is no laughing matter, and in 1997, organisers attempted to enter toe wrestling into the Olympics, but their attempt at getting their foot in the door was sadly denied. This didn’t deter the toe enthusiasts though, and the wrestling championships are still very much a part of Derbyshire lifestyle. This weird British pastime is at the top of the wacky sports list.

shinkicking-300x1681Shin kicking: if pain is your game, then the weird sport of shin kicking will definitely get you interested. This excruciating sport is part of the Cotswold Games, England’s oldest Olympiad. Shin kicking consists of exactly what the name suggests: kicking your opponents shins until they fall down. Never was there a sport so spine chilling, but nevertheless, it remains one of the most popular events at the Cotswold’s Games.

weird-sports-21 Wife Carrying: In a country that only sees a few sunny weeks per year, it is no wonder that the Finnish love their weird and unusual sports. Originally meant as a harmless joke, wife carrying became as popular as Kalakukko (fish made inside bread) and Poronkaristys (sautéed reindeer). Husbands carry their wives along a series of obstacle courses. The course follows 253 metres of terrain, as well as a metre deep water section. Weird sports like this catch on surprisingly quickly, and even the Guinness World Book of Records has established a category for wife carrying.

6Beard and Moustache growing: now here is one of the craziest, yet natural sports around. If you love growing your moustache or grooming your beautiful beard, then why not enter the World Beard and Moustache Championships. You can take part in specialist categories such as the Dali moustache or Goatee category, or if you are feeling slightly wild, then why not enter the Freestyle section and let your beard speak for itself.

_41200243_rolling2Cheese Rolling: When you think of cheese, the word rolling doesn’t come to mind straight away. For the weird sport of cheese rolling, you don’t need to have any skills, and strength or vigilance is not a requirement. This quirky competition commences at the top of a hill. A wheel of Double Gloucester cheese is rolled down the hill and the competitors have to run after it. This usually results in contestants flying through the air and can be rather dangerous. In most cases, the cheese is too fast for the eager competitors and rolls away without them.

In the weird world of alternative sports, it rings true that the more bizarre the sport, the better. Even though these sports have not been accepted by mainstream institutions like the Olympics, they continue to grow and spread the unity of weird sports around the globe.
