Disease Mapper is one of those jobs of the future that is easy to believe, in fact, you wonder why it didn’t come along sooner. At its most basic, disease mapping involves charting outbreaks of illness and epidemics across the world and cross-referencing them with seasonal data – weather patterns, crop growth – to try and predict how far a particular disease reach, how long an outbreak will last and when we can potentially expect a resurgence. In 2007, a disease mapper could expect to earn between $40,000 and $150,000 (£24,406 and £91,524) per year. Bearing in mind the current recession those figures are probably still pretty accurate.

Robotics

If your stereotypical little boy of the 80s didn’t grow up dreaming of a future job as a robot programmer his only other option was dinosaur expert. Now, dinosaurs are so Jurassic Park and robot programming is where it’s at. Attention to detail is of paramount importance, as is, rather obviously, an interest in programming and robotics. A degree in computer science comes in handy, as does experience in the practical applications of IT. If you’re an IT contractor trying to find your way in today’s job market, you may want to consider robot programming.

When terms such as ‘high-energy laser accelerator’ and ‘robotic arm’ enter a career is when children of the 80’s start to raise their eyebrows. They look for flashing green lights and expect to see flashes of crinkly silver at every turn. And the truth is that radio-surgery is still a little sci-fi. It requires special equipment – said laser accelerator and robotic arm – and special training before highly qualified and experienced radiation oncologists are allowed anywhere near patients. The Cyberknife, which is the future sounding name for the machine that carries out this future sounding job, channels micro-thin rays of radiation at tumours and certain kinds of cancer. Under the right conditions, radio-surgery can vaporize tumours within 5 one-hour treatments, which beats chemotherapy into a cocked hat.

Virtual Lawyer

And then we enter the realm of the unreal, really. Virtual lawyers are taking virtual gaming sensation, Second Life, by storm. Apparently, intellectual property rights is a hotly contested issue in virtual gaming with real/virtual patents at stake. It gets confusing, but basically, people who create products or design clothes or houses or whatever in Second Life want to ensure that they own the rights to their particular franchise because they can make real money from it. Some lawyers have chosen to practice in the virtual world only, which is dangerous because it’s not a particularly good money spinner, yet.

Others, like Steven Lieberman, span both the real and the virtual legal landscape. Lieberman meets potential clients online and then takes their professional relationship further offline. He’s even set up a ‘law island’ where real lawyers can congregate in virtual space and do business. He counts the American Bar Association and the FBI as clients, so no matter how bizarre it sounds, this is one of the future jobs that looks set to stay.

The General Secretary of the UK Trade Union Congress (TUC), Brendan Barber commented on the latest employment data and said, “Economists may argue about whether we are now out of recession and into recovery, but in the real world of Britain’s workplaces people are still losing their jobs and finding it harder and harder to get new ones”.

Barber is urging the UK government to do something about the employment situation and provide help for jobseekers before the unemployment costs are too great. “Youth unemployment is now at its highest rate for 15 years. And it will get far worse when millions of fresh school leavers and graduates start looking for work in the coming weeks. Unemployment leaves a permanent scar on young people’s lives and Government must do all it can to stop joblessness blighting another generation’s lives,” he said.

The Trade Union Congress predicts that unemployment levels will rise above 3 million next year, although the claimant unemployment count is not rising as rapidly as expected. Certain UK sectors are also expected to do better for employment than others.

Careers expected to flourish:

Unsurprisingly, the employment sectors which are set to flourish in the UK are directly related to technological advances, particularly in the area of disease and genetic research, as well as medicine and computing. Traditional ‘recession safe’ jobs such as teaching, policing and care work will also continue to be in high demand. The following contract and permanent employment positions in the UK are expected do well in the next five to ten years.

Careers expected to decline:

It is expected that technological advances will also succeed in pushing out more ‘old fashioned’ jobs including typesetting and print positions and secretarial positions as many tasks are now more easily performed on a PC. Outsourcing for lower human resource costs has also brought about a decline in certain employment sectors in the UK such as programming, call centres and data entry.

History tells us that the recession will lift and UK employment will regain its footing. Europe was decimated by the end of the Second World War but clever business and government growth schemes succeeded in making Western Europe the success story of the 20th century. The recession has changed the way we see and do things which can only mean that we will rise from the flames again. We simply need to recession proof our jobs for the future and look where the areas of UK employment and economic growth lie.

One of the best ways to prepare for a job interview is to use a checklist for all the tasks that you need to complete so that you are absolutely ready when your name is called. You can personalise checklists to include the things that are important to you, such as buying a new outfit or getting a haircut. And while these factors help in creating a good first impression, there are other items that have a far more significant impact on the successful outcome of your job interview.

Research on the company in question is particularly important. Thanks to the internet and all manner of cool social media tools learning about your prospective employers is one of the easiest items on the interview preparation checklist to complete. But don’t think that a cursory glance over the website will fool interviewers; proper interview preparation includes a thorough investigation of the company’s position and role in the industry. Read the company blog, if there is one, to get a feel for the attitude, tone and approach of the various staff members and also to find out about recent or upcoming projects, developments and fields of interest.

It’s also a good idea to get accurate directions to the job interview and to take a dry run to see how long the trip takes, so that you give yourself plenty of time to prepare yourself at home and still arrive at least 15 minutes early. Not only is punctuality an important quality to embrace – it demonstrates consideration for others and a keen sense of responsibility – the extra time will allow you to calm down and get your nerves under control while you get a feel for the layout of the offices.

How you conduct yourself during the job interview is vital and a good way to prepare for unexpected interview questions and compose answers to the tough but standard questions that you can expect is to hold a mock interview with a close friend or family member. Some of the trickiest interview questions are those frequently asked by interviewers the world over, such as “Why should the company hire you?”, “How did you distinguish yourself in your previous job?” and the dreaded “What are your salary expectations?” Get advice on your interview skills and techniques and don’t forget about your body language. You need to become aware of fidgeting and nervous foot tapping or compulsive gestures such as hair flicking so that you can try and control them during the real interview. Nothing upsets the interview process quite as much as nervous nose picking or finger drumming the tune to “I did it my way” on the table top.

The final interview question is the one that often requires the most preparation: “Do you have any questions for us?”

Most job interview preparation tips and guidelines suggest that you always ask a few questions – to show initiative – but sometimes you genuinely don’t have any questions because they were all answered during the course of the interview. This is ok just tell your interviewers exactly that but if you feel at all uncertain about anything involved with the job now is the time to ask. Good interview questions you may want to consider include training opportunities, management structure, promotion paths and project time scales.

When preparing for your job interview don’t forget to place all relevant supporting documentation (references, extra copies of your CV, appraisals, ID, driver’s license) in a professional looking briefcase or folder to keep them neat. Nothing says scatter brain and lack of preparation quite like pulling crumpled and tatty looking references from a carry all with AC/DC on the front. Landing your dream post depends on thorough job interview preparation, without it you might as well resign yourself to an eternally bruised ego and mediocre job prospects for the rest of your life.
