Laptops and pc’s designed by a community

Community Laptop

How would you like to design a computer by consensus? And that’s not a hypothetical question either because it is being done by Intel and Asus who are collaboratively running a community site where people add their own input to design a dream computer. The purpose: For Intel and Asus to take the cue from consumers and design the world’s first community PCs and laptops.

Ideas on the ‘perfect computer’ will be shared by visitors to the site who have the option to exchange ideas, vote on concepts and enter into discussions with the ultimate goal of achieving a PC for the people. The best part of this site is that the computer manufacturers will be drawing on a multitude of people’s experiences, ideas and consumer desires. This is probably one of the cleverer marketing tactics to date; if you hand over the reins to your laptop buyers, a lot of product loyalty and interest will be fostered.

And you never know – there may be a budding genius on the consumer side of this equation. However, many of the contributions are pretty run of the mill with users requesting more powerful batteries, less shine on the screen and lighter units.

A few suggestions have been very creative with one user desiring a glow-in-the-dark notebook that is also water resistant. That might be useful for a night fisherman, but less so for the general public. Another unique consumer wanted a laptop that grows its own hair so that you can cut and style it; although, that might be more for a specialist niche market. Some milder creative suggestions came from one man who suggested having the laptop as a high-quality projector so you have a virtual big screen, and another who suggested using dual screens.

Of course, you can’t expect all ideas to be legitimate, but it’s the ultimate in market research to provide a figurative blank page on which people can express everything they want. In this way, companies can truly tap into market demand. Having said that, a glow-in-the-dark, hair sprouting laptop sounds more like a monster than a monitor to me.

Perhaps computer companies are already doing well at determining people’s less insanely creative wants. They want bigger, better, faster and fancier. It’s as simple as that. Yet, the website is excellent advertising and a lot of fun, even if it doesn’t succeed in producing the world’s next best thing.
