We know that climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is no easy task and is just a tad more difficult than reaching the top a bunch of climbing fames in your local park and those who have braved the bad weather and have exerted themselves to reach the highest point on earth should be honoured for their dedication and determination. Recently, another man completed the hike to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro and what makes this man’s story so unique is that he is now the oldest man in the world to do so.
George Solt from Olney in Buckinghamshire recently climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and at the ripe old age of 82, he has now become the oldest man in the world to climb the mountain. Solt did not however climb Mount Kilimanjaro for his own self satisfaction however; his adventure was all in loving memory of his wife as well as his dedication to raising money for the Willen Hospice in Milton Keys where his wife spent her last few months before she passed away.
His hike to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro has gained worldwide attention and even celebrities are honouring him for his accolade. Hugh Hefner of the Playboy magazine empire recently nominated George Solt for a Heffy Award – and award that honours older men who go to the extreme – like climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Solt said that he found the award nomination amusing and that he is very proud of the fact that he is now a world record holder for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro at such an age.
