With the global recession still feasting at most of our wallets, fans of the London West End will need to carefully plan their visits to the theatre hub of the UK in 2010. Let’s ignore the ever increasing London property prices and take a look at some of the main attractions that are worth checking out this year.

London West End 2010 – What to watch!

2010 is a big year for the London West End theatre. Perhaps the biggest and most anticipated of the London West End shows this year is the opening of the long awaited sequel to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera” which will be opening at the Adelphi Theatre in March. Titled “Love Never Dies”, the Phantom sequel is set 10 years after the original production and continues with the tale of Christine and The Phantom. Get your tickets early as this is going to be a massive hit! If you’re not in or around London, then make sure you book in to one of the many London West End Hotels and spend what promises to be a very entertaining night at the theatre.

January sees the opening of the much awaited musical adaptation of the Hollywood movie “Legally Blonde”. Sheridan Smith takes the lead as the ditsy Harvard law student Elle Woods, and ex-pop singer Duncan James of “Blue” fame co-stars as the object of her affection. As far as London West End Musicals go, this promises to be a controversial but definitely not boring show.

If you’re not a big fan of musicals then be sure to check out one of last years biggest premiers, “Jerusalem” which moves to the West End this year after winning numerous acclaimed awards at the Annual Standard Awards evening held at the end of last year. The play Walked away with the prestigious Best Play Award and Mark Rylance, who stars in the production, bagged the award for best actor. I’d suggest making a night of it by going for a romantic meal at one of the London West End Restaurants, followed by a viewing of Jerusalem – definitely a winning recipe for a memorable evening!

The above plays are the biggest highlights for the year ahead so be sure you check them out. However, if you still haven’t been to see any of the ongoing shows that the West End has to offer, then be sure to try and check out the following which have all been massive hits in the past few months:

  • Sister Act The Musical
  • Priscilla The Musical
  • Oliver
  • The Photographer’s Gallery

As you can see, there is plenty do and see this year in the ever-entertaining UK theatre capital. Be sure to dig deep into those pockets and make sure that you go and check out at least one of the above shows. Remember that there is a lot more than just theatre going on so do your best to check out the London West End clubs and bars after your show and turn an ordinary night into an unforgettable one!
